In a series of five webinars over a week, a different range of measures for creating warmer homes will be described, some of which cost very little compared with the benefits. The availability of various grants will also be discussed and how these can be accessed.
The topics for each day are as follows:
Monday 19th April – Creating warmer homes: UK homes are more poorly insulated than any other housing stock in Europe relative to its climate and the current rate of replacement is less than 1% per annum. So it makes sense to create warmer homes to improve health of occupants whilst at the same time reducing carbon emissions.
Tuesday 20th April – Draught busting and radiators: There are two very low cost options for creating warmer homes which can be easily implemented and will result in warmer homes within a short time period of being initiated. Identifying draughts is easily accomplished in cold weather and are usually associated with air leaks around windows and external doors. Methods of draught stripping will be described.
Wednesday 21st April – Do it yourself warmth check: An important step in creating a warmer home is to undertake a DIY health check of your dwelling. A starting point is consulting the EPC register of either your home or an adjacent property. Then to analyse your annual heating bill to decide how effective is your insulation, if any. Also to undertake some temperature measurements. Finally to rank the possible measures in terms of creating a warmer home.
Thursday 22nd April – Upgrading insulation: The primary means of creating warmer homes is to upgrade the insulation level particularly if you are living in a dwelling built pre 1965 as the building regulations did not require any insulation to be installed. The relative losses through the various building elements will be considered and how insulation can be added to reduce the heat loss.
Friday 23rd April – Getting the work done: While some warmth upgrades can be undertaken by occupants, others require a competent installer. The process of identifying an installer who is willing to undertake a survey free of charge and produce a detailed quote ranking warmth options will be described. What checks owners or landlords can make to ensure installer is competent and quote is reasonable. Grants, external help and support will be discussed as well as the role of owners and tenants. The series ends with a plea for those who take up any grant to encourage others to do so.
Each webinar will be accompanied by a question and answer session.
